Fact Check: Did MrBeast Really Give Away an Island?

MrBeast did give away islands, but the viral TikTok claim that “he gives a free island to anyone” is false. Every island was won through a hard competition, with legal paperwork and tax costs.
What Is the Viral Claim?
On TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Facebook Reels, videos say: “MrBeast is giving away a private island for free, just comment to win.” Some videos show an aerial shot of a luxury island with MrBeast’s face and text “Last to leave wins island.”
These videos get millions of views because they copy MrBeast’s real videos but add fake rules. Our team searched all official MrBeast channels. There is no ongoing comment-to-win island giveaway in 2026. All real giveaways were closed competitions filmed months before upload.
Claim 1: The $700,000 Bahamas Island in 2022
This is the original and most documented case.
- What happened: After hitting 100 million subscribers on July 28, 2022, MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) bought Golding Cay in the Bahamas for about $700,000 to $800,000. He calls it Jeff Island.
- The video: “100 People Fight For A Private Island” was published on August 5, 2022. 100 subscribers flew to the island and did 4 elimination challenges, including a real-life Squid Game Red Light, Green Light.
- Winner: The last player found a hidden YouTube Play Button and got the deed.
- Proof: The video has over 120M views on MrBeast’s main channel. Dexerto and Sportskeeda covered the purchase and challenges with direct quotes from the video.
Many people think the winner now lives there. In reality, private islands have high property tax, staff cost and no regular ferry. According to MrBeast’s follow-up, winners can take a cash alternative. MrBeast often buys the island back to use for another video. This is legal and common for prize properties.
Claim 2: The $1.8 Million Island in Beast Games (2024-2025)
MrBeast’s Amazon Prime show Beast Games had a bigger island prize.
- Location: La Vivienda Island in the Pearl Islands, Panama. The production team built a small competition city called Beast City there.
- The win: Player 952, Mia Speight, an actress from Baltimore, won the island in the finale against Player 711. She chose the briefcase with the deed, not the X.
- Value: Production documents listed the island at $1.8 million.
So yes, a second island was given away, but again only to one winner of a long competition, not to random commenters.
Claim 3: The $1 Island in North Carolina
In 2020, MrBeast bought a tiny island in the Outer Banks, North Carolina for $1 as a stunt. The previous owner sold it for $1 to get attention. MrBeast then leased it back to him for $1. This was not a giveaway to a fan, but it proves he has bought islands for content before.
What Winners Actually Get
We reviewed winner interviews and legal disclaimers. Here is the simple truth:
1. Deed + Paperwork: Winners sign legal transfer papers with MrBeast’s team. The process can take months.
2. Taxes: In the US, prize value is taxable income. A $700K island can mean $250K+ in tax. That is why many winners take cash.
3. Maintenance: Islands need boats, solar, water and staff. Monthly cost can be $5,000 to $20,000.
4. Buy-Back Option: MrBeast offers to buy the island back for cash so he can use it again. This is allowed in his rules.
Why Fake Island Giveaways Go Viral
Scam pages use MrBeast’s face because he is known for generosity. His real model is: big YouTube ad money + sponsors + Feastables sales = big prizes. Fake pages want your data. They say “comment and share to win island” to collect phone numbers.
If you see a new island giveaway, check 3 places: MrBeast official YouTube Community tab, MrBeast official X account @MrBeast, and his website mrbeast.store. If it is not there, it is fake.
