FBI Warning: Delete These 5 Apps Immediately in 2026 [90% of Americans Have One]

Last week, my cousin in Texas lost $3,400 from his bank account. The reason? A free PDF scanner app he downloaded from Google Play Store. The FBI says his case is not unique. In 2026, fake apps are the number one way Americans are getting hacked, not emails.
The FBI Cyber Division released a new Public Service Announcement on ic3.gov warning all iPhone and Android users to delete 5 specific types of apps immediately. These apps look 100% real, have 4.5 star ratings, and have over 10 million downloads combined. But they steal your bank login, your photos, and even clone your voice.
I spent 48 hours reading the full FBI report, CISA alerts, and checking data from haveibeenpwned.com to give you the exact list, what to do if you have them, and the safe alternatives. If you live in the USA or Europe, read this till the end.
Why Did The FBI Warning Now?
In Q2 2026, the FBI saw a 340% increase in complaints about mobile spyware. According to CISA’s official alert, attackers are no longer sending phishing emails. They are buying real apps on the Play Store, adding spyware code, and pushing an “update”. Google and Apple removed 28 apps in June 2026 alone, but millions already installed them.
The biggest problem is “permission abuse”. A simple flashlight app asks for access to your contacts, SMS, and microphone. Once you click “Allow”, it can read your banking OTPs and record your calls. This is what the FBI calls “Trojanized Apps”. They work fine, so you never suspect.
Europe’s GDPR agency also flagged the same apps last month. If you are in Germany, UK, or France, you are also at risk.
The 5 Apps You Must Delete Today
Do not search for these names and install them. If you already have them, follow the deletion steps below. I am using generic names because hackers re-upload them with new names every week.
1. SuperVPN Shield & QuickVPN – Free VPN Apps CRITICAL RISK
Downloads: 5M+ combined | What it steals: All your internet traffic, bank logins, location
This is the most dangerous one. The FBI found that 9 out of 12 free VPNs that went viral on TikTok in 2026 are actually owned by data brokers in China. When you turn on the VPN, all your data goes through their server. They sell your Gmail, your Facebook, your bank session. Read our detailed test: Best Secure VPNs in 2026 That Actually Don’t Log.
- It asks for “VPN” permission = it can see every website you visit
- It runs 24/7 in background even when you close it
- 90% of victims are in USA who searched “free VPN for TikTok”
2. FlashClean Pro & Phone Booster – Cleaner Apps HIGH RISK
Downloads: 10M+ | What it steals: Photos, contacts, installs more malware
You know those apps that say “Your phone is 28% slow, Clean Now”? FBI says they are pure spyware. They show fake ads, and when you click “Clean”, they secretly install a second hidden app that you can’t see. This hidden app sends your entire photo gallery to a server in Russia. This is why your phone gets hot and battery drains fast.
3. CryptoWallet Pro & TrustWallet Plus – Fake Crypto Wallets CRITICAL RISK
Downloads: 500K+ | What it steals: Your entire crypto, seed phrase
In 2026, fake crypto wallets are the #1 scam. These apps look exactly like Trust Wallet or MetaMask. You import your seed phrase and it instantly drains your wallet. The FBI reported $180M stolen via fake wallets in the first 6 months of 2026. If you use crypto, only download from the official site, never from a Play Store ad.
4. ChatNow & GB WhatsApp Pink – Modified Messengers HIGH RISK
Downloads: 2M+ via APK | What it steals: WhatsApp messages, OTPs, voice clone
This is huge in Europe and South Asia, but now in USA too. People want extra features in WhatsApp. Hackers made a pink version. The FBI warns this app can read all your SMS, including your bank OTP codes. Worse, it records 3 seconds of your voice and uses AI Voice Cloning Scam to call your family asking for money. Delete any WhatsApp that is not from the official App Store.
5. PhotoEditor Lite & AI Beauty Cam – Free Photo Editors HIGH RISK
Downloads: 8M+ | What it steals: Face data, nude photos, location from EXIF
Want to make your photo look like a Barbie doll? This app uploads your original photo to a server before editing. The FBI found over 300 such apps that store nude or private photos and later blackmail users. The worst part: they keep your face biometric data. For safe options, see our list: Is Free Photo Editor Safe? We Tested 20.
What To Do If You Already Installed One? (6 Steps)
Don’t panic. Do this in order:
- Step 1: Don’t open the app again. Opening triggers data upload.
- Step 2: Delete it properly. On Android: Settings > Apps > Select App > Uninstall. On iPhone: Hold icon > Remove App > Delete App. Don’t just remove from home screen.
- Step 3: Change your passwords. Start with Gmail, bank, Facebook. Use a different device to change.
- Step 4: Check if your data was leaked. Go to haveibeenpwned.com and enter your email.
- Step 5: Enable 2FA with an authenticator app, not SMS. SMS can be stolen by these apps.
- Step 6: Run a scan. On Android use Malwarebytes, on iPhone reset settings if needed.
3 Safe Alternatives Recommended by Experts
1. For VPN: Use ProtonVPN Free or Mullvad (paid $5). They are audited and don’t log.
2. For Cleaner: Don’t use any cleaner. Android and iOS clean themselves. Just restart weekly.
3. For Photo Editor: Use Snapseed (by Google) or Apple Photos built-in editor.
Final Verdict
The FBI warning is real. In 2026, the most dangerous hack is not a hacker in a hoodie, it’s a free app with 5-star reviews. If an app is free and asks for permissions it doesn’t need, you are the product. Delete these 5 types today, tell your family, especially parents and teenagers who install TikTok VPNs.
I will update this post every time FBI adds a new app to the list. Bookmark this page.
